I’m afraid there was a major bug which slipped into 0.4.5 that would prevent anyone from downloading torrents. Pleas e be sure to upgrade as soon as possible so that you’ll be able to download torrents once EZTV is back online.

Note: The Daily Show and Colbert Report will still have issues downloading due to changes in the ezRSS website. I’m working on the issue but there’s no quick fix except for ezRSS reverting to the old format of how the shows are listed.

Changes in 0.4.7:

• Fixes a compiling issue in 0.4.6 that would prevent TVShows from running on anything but Snow Leopard.
• Fixed a critical bug where no episodes would be downloaded. This was unrelated to the EZTV outage.
• Blocked more Doctor Who episodes (seriously?!).

Edit: An update was released for TVShows 0.4.4 that fixes the issue of losing subscriptions upon updating.

Changes:

• Removed over 1162 junk shows from the list. More info at http://bit.ly/1kqXWJ
• Blocked the misnamed “CSI New York 07×03″ and “Doctor Who 20×5″
• Attempted to clear up confusion surrounding show qualities.
• Rearranged the Preferences window.
• Fixed a possible bug with Ruby 1.9 (thanks to Justin Case).
• TVShows now supports sending anonymous system information. This will be used to decide which OSX versions to support.

Unfortunately it looks like the ezRSS and ezTV websites are having some DNS issues right now. Until those are fixed you won’t be able to download new episodes or a new show list.

Just sit tight and the problems should be resolved shortly. As always, TVShows will catch you back up on any torrents you’ve missed during this minor mishap.

At the end of the day, over 1079 “shows” have been removed from the TVShows show list including: misnamed shows, canceled shows, non-shows, and specials.

Mostly these shows were just annoying and didn’t really affect a user’s experience with TVShows. But overall this means roughly three things:

• TVShows should be quicker. The file size of the show list dropped around 250KB. The smaller the file/list is then the quicker TVShows should be.
• A few shows you’re subscribed to may disappear. There’s a chance you might have been subscribed to a show which was canceled. However, there’s no point in checking for updates on a show that’s been confirmed canceled.
• Shows that remain are now somewhat more likely to be legit and updated regularly. This isn’t a promise or guarantee, but you can now be a slight bit more certain. At the very least you won’t have to juggle around between misnamed shows trying to figure out which one is correct.

With that said, here’s the list of changes I made in this release. As always, please be sure to notify me of any issues you have or features you’d like to see. I’ll do my best to try and help you out.

Changes:

• Hopefully fixed a bug on OS 10.4 where 0 byte torrents were still being created. (Issue #11, #3)
• Subscriptions are now saved before updating the show list. (Issue #3)
• “Automatically check for updates” checkbox in the Preference window works again. (Issue #9)
• Window size/position and toolbar customizations are now remembered correctly. (Issue #2)

On the bright side, you get some new toolbar icons and a different colored background for subscribed shows. I’m still looking into a complete UI refresh, so try not to get too attached.

Changes:

• Fixes the issue where TVShows could not download the show list.
• Now using toolbar icons by Matt Ball
• The background color for subscribed shows has been temporarily changed to something more pleasant.

Unfortunately, 720p (1.1GB+) versions of Fringe are the only ones available. If your Quality preferences are set below “Very High (720p)” then TVShows won’t download Fringe until it’s given up on downloading the quality you have selected. This isn’t just an “issue” with Fringe, either. It goes for any show that doesn’t match the quality preferences you have set. After 5 days (I think) of not being able to find the episode in your quality, TVShows will go ahead and download the closest match.

I’m currently considering per-show preferences, and also looking into updating the algorithm that decides whether or not it should download the show immediately or not. (Since Fringe has always been 720p, we might as well give up on a lower quality immediately.) Until then, sit tight. TVShows is doing exactly what it’s supposed to do, and your episodes will be downloading soon enough.
