TVShows: Over 1079 “shows” Removed

Posted October 24th, 2009. Filed under TVShows News

Edit: As of commit 4019c24 there are now 1162 blocked shows.

At the end of the day, over 1079 “shows” have been removed from the TVShows show list including: misnamed shows, canceled shows, non-shows, and specials.

Mostly these shows were just annoying and didn’t really affect a user’s experience with TVShows. But overall this means roughly three things:

  • TVShows should be quicker. The file size of the show list dropped around 250KB. The smaller the file/list is then the quicker TVShows should be.
  • A few shows you’re subscribed to may disappear. There’s a chance you might have been subscribed to a show which was canceled. However, there’s no point in checking for updates on a show that’s been confirmed canceled.
  • Shows that remain are now somewhat more likely to be legit and updated regularly. This isn’t a promise or guarantee, but you can now be a slight bit more certain. At the very least you won’t have to juggle around between misnamed shows trying to figure out which one is correct.

The clearance of the show list has gotten rid of a couple of shows that actually work and update.

Just noticed No Heroics dissappeared from the list. First season ended, but I think it’s not cancelled. At least, it doesn’t appear as cancelled on TV.com.

Also, I see that Caprica is on the “Ended, not updated, miniseries, etc.” list. Caprica is a new series that will air next year. The pilot was released a few months ago on DVD so it appears on ezrss.it, but there are no more episodes at this moment because the regular season will begin next year.

One more vote for No Heroics. The Penguins of Madagascar is another that is listed in TVRage as “Returning”.

Also: Alice keeps being listed, bus misinterpreted. The miniseries was called Alice 2009 but TVShows reads it as “Alice” and shows episode 20×09 as the last one.

    • No Heroics has been fixed and Penguins of Madagascar will be soon. I’ll probably release a minor update for Christmas to add it and a few other shows back.

As for Alice I’m not sure how much I can do. TVShows relies on the season and episode numbers that ezRSS reports to decide whether or not a new episode is out. Since they’re all listed as Season 20 Episode 9 on ezRSS, Alice presents a few issues that I’m not sure how to handle quite yet.

Thanks for the update. Didn’t catch it until today. I’ll check for a renewed subscriptions file (does TVShows currently prompt when there are changes to auto-update itself?)

Understood about Alice. I don’t mind much, really. It’s an error on their own scripts and regexes, I expect.

I tried updating the subscriptions list right now and No Heroics still doesn’t show. I’ll check tomorrow in the day to see if this is actually even connecting to verify.

        • Run “Check for updates” tomorrow. I’ll be releasing 0.4.5 with minor updates later tonight. :) School prevented me from releasing it earlier.

To answer your question, though: yes and no. The list of shows is downloaded from ezRSS. Then on the TVShows side I have it remove junk shows, but a few good ones got caught. It probably wasn’t my best idea ever but I sure was sick of scrolling through and seeing a lot of crap or shows that weren’t even being released anymore.

So, no, it doesn’t prompt to autoupdate whenever there are new additions to the subscription list but it does prompt to autoupdate when there’s an app update. And after all app updates it forces an update of your subscriptions.

Funny thing about Penguins of Madagascar and ezrss. They seem to have dropped the series completely, even if it’s a regular one.
